Excellent Ice Maker With Integrated Water Filter

We bought this Kitchenaid Ice Maker primarily because of the kind of ice it makes-the little square, clear "chicklet" ice which works so well in most drinks. We had a ten year old GE Monogram ice maker which failed, and which made the same kind of ice, but GE no longer makes a similar model-this Kitchenaid is about the only one left if you want this particular type of ice. The ice maker itself is excellent. It comes with a drain pump already installed internally (a plus if you do not have a gravity drain), and not as a separate kit as suggested by Kitchenaid documentation. So, if you want to use a gravity drain you'll need to re-route the drain lines and the electrical connections and/or also just remove the drain pump and use the gravity drain. I installed this machine myself and it wasn't hard, but rerouting the drain and electrical from the included drain pump was pesky. I also purchased a 5/8" internal diameter reinforced vinyl drain hose to extend the drain reach to the gravity drain-the included line is too short, in my opinion, and more designed to connect the drain pump. You will also need an ice maker supply line (NOT included)-the same kind that hooks up a household refrigerator ice maker. If you do not have the supply line, you can't install the machine. This ice maker also has an integrated, changeable water filter, which is excellent and makes a positive difference in ice quality and flavor (filter is NOT included). Overall, I'm very happy we got this machine-it's working perfectly and we love it. I might finally add that I called Kitchenaid customer support in Michigan before we bought this and asked some pretty technical and detailed questions about the machine and the install. The representatives I got were promptly available, knowledgable, helpful and completely outstanding. A BIG plus for a potentially complicated appliance and I like the "Made in the USA" product support. I would consider Kitchenaid support a significant plus.
Yes, I recommend this product
